Former CEO of 'PGA of America' reflects
Jim L. Awtrey
Senior VP, Business Development
A SHORT TIME AGO I left the PGA of America after 18 years as CEO. My job entailed many exciting years of travel throughout the U.S. and abroad. During those years I found myself answering numerous questions about the growth of golf in America and its expansion around the globe.
I believed I had learned much about the business of golf and the impact golf could have on economic development, both as a strategic planner and an active participant. Little did I know that my learning was just beginning. I soon came to realize that I had not paid close enough attention to world history while growing up in Oklahoma.
Fortunately someone from Oklahoma did! Jerry Barton, Landmark's CEO, had left Oklahoma to become a Rhodes Scholar and world traveler, while at the same time acquiring an education in politics. He not only brought that education back to Oklahoma, where he became a successful developer, he later spread his wings to become one of the nation's leading golf/real estate developers.
When I joined Landmark I thought I had a good knowledge of the golf business, but I had no idea what I was about to learn and experience. In a few short months I have visited France, Spain, Sicily, Ireland, Barbados and Antigua. Future trips are in the works to Montenegro, St. Lucia, Grenada and all points east.
Long noted for its U.S. success, Landmark is becoming a true international golf real estate development company. I am privileged to be a part of the company's new growth and development.
The most significant new opportunity upcoming will be the Landmark Club. It will provide a unique adventure that allows discerning travelers to combine an International Golf Membership, first-class golf destinations worldwide, and second home and vacation opportunities with the level of service long associated with the Landmark Land Company.
I look forward to sending you future communiques as we bring the Landmark Club and new adventures to you from around the world.
